1828, Oct - (0) Born. The 1850, 1870 & 1880 census' has George and parents (unnamed) being born in Canada (other census' record New York as the birth place).

1835, - (7) apprenticed to John Decker (25) to learn the trade of Tinsmith and get an education.

1836, - (8) Brought to Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland. by John Decker (26) and family where John set up in his trade as Tinsmith.

1847, - (19) John Decker (37) and business moved 4 1/2 miles Northwest of Bel Air, to the Forest Hill area (his shop was at the intersection of Cherry Hill Road and Rocks Road just 2 miles from Cooptown and George's future wife Martha). The house he occupied is still standing as of 1998.

1849, - (21) helped John Decker (39) invent and patent an improved ice cream freezer.

1851, Dec 2 - Tues. - (23) Married Martha Ellen Durham (22) daughter of Abraham and Martha Louisa (Prine) Durham of Cooptown, MD. at Watters Memorial Church by Rev. W. Wilson. William A. Durham (cousin of Martha's) was at the wedding.

1852, Oct 1 - Fri. - (24) daughter JoAnna Belle born.

1856, May 20 - Tues. - (28) son Henry Clay Smith born.

1856, Jul 26 - Sat. - (28) John Decker's (46) oldest son Richmond (21-05-08) died and was buried at Christ Episcopal Church in Forest Hill, Harford County, MD.

1857, April - (29) John Decker (47) moved his business back to Bel Air. George did not go with him. He became a Tinsmith in Cooptown. His shop was located at the intersection of Bailey and Sharon Roads.

1859, Jan 1 - Sat. - (31) son William Abraham born.

1861, - (33) Family tradition says that George sent his family and pregnant wife back home to the Buffalo/Tonowanda, New York area because of the war and that a son was born there.

1861, Sep 14 - Sat. - (33) son Edwin W. Smith born.

1862 - (34) John Decker and his remaining family sold all holdings in Harford County and moved to Wisconsin. John's second oldest daughter Sarah died in 1860 and his youngest daughter Alice died in 1861. Both girls and their brother are buried in Christ's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Forest Hill, Harford Co., MD

1863, Jun 27 - Sat. - (35) Enlisted in Union Army, 10th MD. Volunteers Infantry, Company E. Trained in Baltimore.

1863, Aug 5 - Wed. - (35) Billeted in Harpers Ferry, W.V.

1863, Oct 18 - Sun. - (36) Fought in Charlestown, W.V.

1863, Nov - (36) Fought in Martinsburg, W.V.

1864, Jan 29 - Fri. - (36) Honorably Discharged. George was never the same after he came back from the war. He was always sick and got progressively worse.

1872, Feb 2 - Fri. - (44) father-in-law Abraham Durham (86) died. Buried at Old Brick Baptist Church, Jarrettsville, MD.

1872, Jun 13 - Thur. - (44) wife Martha Ellen (45) is given 7 Ac. in Cooptown, MD. by her mother Martha Louisa (Prine) Durham, widow of Abraham Durham (ALJ 27/291). George and Martha had a two story house built on the site which was next door to Jane P. Middleditch's (Martha's sister) house. Both houses were probably built by the same person. They looked alike. George's house was razed in 1990 by Schemm Electric Co. As a side note - I was in that house before it was torn down. I took a girl to my Jr. prom that lived there.

1875, Aug 25 - Wed. - (47) mother-in-law Martha Louisa (Prine) Durham died. Buried at Old Brick Baptist Church, Jarrettsville, MD.

1876, Oct 12 - (47) daughter JoAnna Belle (22) married John Thomas Norris (25) of Whiteford, MD. It has been said that the marriage was not condoned by George or Martha.

1877, Jul 11 - (49) granddaughter Dora Levinia "Ennie" Norris born, daughter of JoAnna Belle (24) and John Thomas Norris (27).

1879, Apr 16 - (51) granddaughter Elizabeth R. "Bessie" Norris born, daughter of JoAnna Belle (26) and John Thomas Norris (29).

1882, Feb - (54) grandson George Nelson Norris born, son of JoAnna Belle (29) and John Thomas Norris (32).

1892, Oct 30 - Sun. - (64) sister-in-law Mahala (Durham) Arthur (77) wife of Robert died. She was the sister of wife Martha Ellen, aunt & mother-in-law of son Henry Clay (36-05-10) and grandmother of daughter-in-law Louisa Christina (Fink) (25-00-14). Mahala was dismissed from Old Brick Baptist Church, Jarrettsville, MD. on 3 July, 1870 (age 55) for "absence from worship services and disorderly conduct". She was buried at William Waters Memorial Church, Cooptown, MD. No headstone.

1893, May - (65) granddaughter Eva Virginia Smith born, daughter of Belle (??) and Edwin W. Smith (32).

1894, Apr 10 - Tues. - (66) sister-in-law Jane P. (Durham) Middleditch (72) wife of John T. died. Buried at Old Brick Baptist Church, Jarrettsville, MD. Wooden marker.

1896, Oct 14 - Wed. - (68) granddaughter Dora Levinia "Ennie" Norris (19), daughter of JoAnna Belle (44-00-13) and John Thomas Norris (46), married William Sherman Swords (30).

1899, Nov 26 - Sun. - (71) granddaughter Elizabeth R. "Bessie" Norris (20), daughter of JoAnna Belle (47-01-25) and John Thomas Norris (49), married Isaac Napoleon Bonaparte Bryan Jones (31).

1900, Nov 2 - Fri. - (72) son William Abraham Sr. (41-10-01) filed for divorce from daughter-in-law Louisa Christina (Fink) (33-00-17).

1901, Aug 19 - Mon. - (73) divorce of daughter-in-law Louisa Christina (Fink) (33-10-03) and son William Abraham Smith Sr. (42-07-18) finalized.

1902, Mar 7 - Sun. - (74) great grandson Stephen Archer "Archie" Jones born, son of granddaughter Elizabeth R. "Bessie" (Norris) (23) and Isaac N. Jones (34).

1903, Jul 5 - Sun. - (75) great grandson John Richard Jones born, son of granddaughter Elizabeth R. "Bessie" (Norris) (24) and Isaac N. Jones (35).

1904, Sep 22 - Thur. - (76) Died of Dropsy at home of daughter JoAnna Belle (51-11-21) and John Thomas Norris (56). "Mr Smith had been ailing for a long time but his death was sudden after all. He retired for the night as well as usual, but when the family awoke in the morning he was found unconscious and died in a short time. he is survived by a widow and one daughter and three sons." (Aegis Oct. 7, 1904).

1904, Sep 25 - Sun. - Buried at Watters Memorial Church, Cooptown, MD., no headstone. Funeral Director S.W. Holden.

NOTES:

George died from illness which were contracted at Martinsburg, West Virginia during the civil war. At the time of his death he was 5' 11" tall and weighed 135 lbs. The doctor said he looked like a very, very old man.

He practiced the trade of Tinsmith in Cooptown, MD. for many years.

He died at the home of his daughter JoAnna Belle and son-in-law John Thomas Norris on Ridge Road in Whiteford, MD.

His wife Martha Ellen Smith died one year later, 7 October, 1905. She also is buried at William Watters Memorial Church. No headstone.

He left no will and no property.
